The Smolny cathedral is situated at the bank of the Neva river on the place of Smolny Dvor. The Smolny palace was built upon the project of B.F.Rastrelli. It is one of the best architectural ensembles in the Russian baroque style. There are four churches around the cathedral. The architect V.Stasov led indoor decorating of the cathedral. The design of the cathedral was simple, but solemn. The building of the cathedral has continued 87 years. 20 of July 1835 the Smolny cathedral was dedicated. After the revolution of 1917 indoor decorating was destroyed. The temple became a warehouse. In 1990 a concert and exhibition centre was opened in the Smolny cathedral.
