In 1704 Peter I started building the garden which got the name the Summer Garden. The total area of the garden was 11.7 ha. It was built under the supervision of Ya.Roozen and P.Surmina.
Galleries, a grotto and a lot of greenhouses was created in the Summer Garden under Peter I. Gardeners made topiary to the tops of trees. Fountain system was built and about 50 fountains decorated the Summer Garden. In 1777 the system was destroied.
The garden is decorated with the marble sculpture which was performed by famous Italian masters D.Bonatsa, A.Tarsia, D.Zorzoni and T.Kvellinus. In 1723 P.Baratta created "Victory and Peace" sculpture which was mounted nearby the Summer Garden in commenoration of the Russian victory in the Northern war.
Assemblies, foreign ambassadors welcome had been organized in the Summer Garden.
