Moskovsky prospekt traced its origin to Moskovsky trakt which was the main road of the district. Originally, it was formed as a part of road for connecting Saint Petersburg with Novgorod, Tver and Moscow. This street runs from Sennaya square and Victory square.
By 1787 the architectural image of Moskovsky prospekt has formed. In 1774 a new palace was built upon the project of Yu.M.Felten not far from Saint Petersburg’s road.
In 1806 a part of the road was called Tsarskoselsky avenue. But there were other names such as Tsarskoselskaya road, Moskovsky trakt and Obukhovsky avenue.
On 16 of October 1838 Moskovskie gates was opened. In 1845 Vosktesensky Novodevichy Monastery was built upon the project of the architect N. E. Efimov.
In 1878 the avenue was renamed Zabalkansky to memorialize the crossing of the Russian army through Shipka pass.
Since 1922 it has been called Mezhdunarodny avenue. In 30s Moskovsky prospekt became the main highway in Leningrad. Since 1936 much work has been done on the avenue. In 1930s 74 buildings were built. During the Great Patriotic War the avenue was one of the main front-line highways.
On 7 of October 1945 the park in honor of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War was laid out.
In 1998 a new building of the Russian National Library was opened on Moscovsky prospekt.
